Abstract
Hindman Settlement School traces its origins to education – recreation programs conducted in Knott and Perry counties, Kentucky by Katherine Pettit and May Stone during the summers of 1899-1901. They were funded by the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs and were aided by a group of women from urban areas. Programs were held in Hazard-1899 (Camp Cedar Grove), Hindman-1900 (Camp Industrial), and Sassafras in Knott County-1901. Working in large tents, they offered classes in sewing, cooking,...

Josiah Combs Collection

Abstract
Born in Hazard, Kentucky, Josiah H. Combs (1886-1960) grew up in Hindman where he learned many folksongs from family members, especially his mother. In 1902 he entered the newly established Hindman Settlement School, where his songs came to the attention of school director, Katherine Pettit (who sent the words of several of these songs to folk music scholar George Lyman Kittredge who arranged for their publication in the Journal of American Folklore.)
